How to Get Funding for a Defibrillator in New Zealand: Grants, Tips & Application Guide

One defibrillator. An entire community of people it could help save.

At The Defib Store, we believe every New Zealand community should have access to life-saving equipment when it matters most.

For many sports clubs, schools, marae, community groups and charities, the biggest hurdle to purchasing a defibrillator is funding.

The good news? There are a number of funding organisations throughout New Zealand that may be able to help.

And there's a way to make your application more compelling: show how your defibrillator could benefit the wider community, not just your own organisation.

Who Can Apply for Defibrillator Funding?

Most community grants in New Zealand are intended for registered charities, incorporated societies and other eligible not-for-profit organisations. Funding is generally not available to private individuals or commercial businesses purchasing equipment for their own use.

Organisations that may be eligible include:

  • Sports clubs and recreational organisations

  • Registered charities and community trusts

  • Incorporated societies and not-for-profit groups

  • Marae and eligible community organisations

  • Schools and educational organisations

  • Community halls and volunteer organisations

  • Surf lifesaving clubs, rescue groups and other community services

Each funding provider has its own eligibility criteria, so it's important to check these before applying. Some funders require evidence of your organisation's legal status, financial statements and a formal committee resolution approving the application.

What if you're a business or don't qualify for funding?

You may still be able to partner with a local charity, sports club or community organisation to establish a shared, publicly accessible defibrillator.

For example, a local business could contribute towards an AED installed at a neighbouring sports club, with the equipment accessible to the wider community 24/7.

Why we encourage 24/7 community access

Imagine your local sports club receives funding for a defibrillator.

It's a fantastic investment. But if the AED is locked inside the clubrooms, it may only be available during training sessions and games.

What happens when someone suffers a cardiac arrest on the neighbouring sports field on a Sunday afternoon? Or a local resident needs help in the evening?

That's where The Defib Store's range of NZ weather-resistant outdoor defibrillator cabinets can make a real difference.

By installing an AED in a suitable outdoor cabinet, your organisation could make it available to:

  • Club members, players, coaches and spectators.

  • Other sporting clubs sharing your facilities.

  • Families, walkers, cyclists and local residents.

  • Community groups using the grounds.

  • Anyone nearby who needs urgent access to an AED.

One funded defibrillator could provide protection to thousands of potential community users over its lifetime.

Built for New Zealand conditions – The Defib Store's outdoor AED cabinets

New Zealand weather can be unpredictable. From coastal salt air and driving rain to hot summer days, an outdoor AED installation needs more than a basic indoor wall box.

At The Defib Store, we offer a range of outdoor defibrillator cabinets designed to help protect AEDs in exposed environments.

Depending on the location, we can help you select cabinets with features such as:

  • Weather-resistant construction suitable for the installation environment.

  • Alarms to alert people when the cabinet is opened.

  • Options for public access without needing a key.

  • Additional protection for high-risk or exposed locations.

  • Space for a defibrillator and, with selected cabinets, additional first aid equipment.

For exposed locations, it's important to choose a cabinet with the appropriate environmental protection and temperature management for the AED inside.

Our advice: When applying for funding, include the cost of a suitable outdoor cabinet in your original application. That way, you're funding a complete community-access solution rather than just the defibrillator.

What funding providers want to know

A strong funding application should clearly explain the community need, how many people could benefit, and how the equipment will be managed.

Consider these questions:

  1. How many members does your organisation have?

  2. How many people visit your grounds or facilities each week?

  3. Do other clubs, schools or community groups use the same area?

  4. Is there already a publicly accessible AED nearby?

  5. Could your AED be made available 24/7 in an outdoor cabinet?

  6. Who will maintain the AED and monitor its battery and pads?

  7. How will you let the community know where it is?

Funders will also want to see quotes, financial statements, letters of support and evidence that your organisation is eligible.

Need a quote for your funding application? We can help.

You don't need to have your grant approved before contacting us. Your quote will likely need to be current. Has your quote expired? No issues we can reissue the quote as many times as you need.

The Defib Store can help you put together a quote for the right defibrillator, cabinet and accessories for your location.

We can also help you consider whether an indoor, weather-resistant or more protective outdoor cabinet is appropriate.
